Imagine being miles away from the hustle and bustle of the city life, relaxing in a rural area overlooking a beautiful 30-acre lake with nature all around you while experiencing an astronomical wonder, a Total Solar Eclipse. That is what you will experience if you join us at Arrowhead Lake Campground in Johnston City, Illinois, for the April 8, 2024, Total Solar Eclipse. Make sure to plan for extra travel time, especially on the day of the eclipse. Like the 2017 eclipse date, April 8, 2024, falls on a Monday. So, if at all possible, try traveling over the weekend before the big day, to avoid traffic.
A total eclipse occurs when the Sun, Moon and Earth are all in a direct line. A total solar eclipse is visible from a small area on Earth. The people who see the total eclipse are in the center of the Moon's shadow when it hits Earth.
The total solar eclipse duration depends on the viewer's latitude, longitude and proximity to the center of the totality path. Astronomy.com says the maximum period of totality for the April 8, 2024, solar eclipse is 4 minutes and 28 seconds. Our location is expected to experience 4 minutes and 8 seconds of totality, making Arrowhead Lake Campground in Johnston City, Illinois, a prime place to watch this experience unfold.
The sky becomes very dark, as if it were night and the temperature begins to change. The animals take the visual cues of the light dimming and the temperature lowering, one will notice that birds become quiet, bees go back to the hive, crickets chirp and frogs croak.
Viewers will notice a more obvious change if they're wearing protective eyewear. Anyone planning to view the Total Solar Eclipse should get a pair of solar viewing glasses. By using these extra-protective shades, observers can look directly at the sun before and after totality. Never look directly at the Sun, eclipsed or otherwise, without proper protective eyewear. The Sun’s radiation can burn your eye's retinas and cause permanent damage or even blindness. PROTECT YOUR EYES!!!!!!
We don't want this to only be an astronomical wonder that you experience while staying at the Arrowhead Lake Campground. There will be other events planned for Saturday, April 6, 2024 through Monday April 8, 2024, for your family to enjoy. We want your stay with us to be as memorable as the eclipse. Events will be posted at a later date.
